Healthy Living and Bike Week June 2015

For the first time this year, we combined both Healthy Living and Bike Week into an action packed 5 days of activities focussing on living healthily.  Here's a snapshop of what we got up to:

Ysgol Sant Elfod SNAG Group

Before we started our Healthy Living Week, the children in our SNAG group had the challenge of recording all the food they ate in a week on a diary. During the week, all of the children in the school had the chance to vote for the diary they thought was the healthiest.

The winner, Nicole Verches in Year 5, was announced in our whole school assembly on the Friday. Nicole was presented with a Healthy Hamper packed with healthy goodies to keep up her good work!

The SNAG group also helped by supporting activities going on in Year 3. With the help of Nia Rees- Williams, the children led a healthy eating quiz for each class. The SNAG group had helped to put the quiz together and did a brilliant job of teaching the Year 3s all about being healthy!

The SNAG group had the chance to help others in their classes when making “Stripy Salad Pots”, putting the skills they had learnt during their cooking sessions with Sarah, our school cook, into practice. The group helped to make the week a great success, and everyone really enjoyed all of the activities.

Bike Week Activities

This year saw the return of the bike to school challenge and the opportunity for year groups to ride their bikes and scooters on the playground on different days at break times and in lessons, Years 5 and 6 created musical scores and used Garage Band to create a "travelling to school" piece.  We also:

  • had our bikes and scooters security marked by the Community Police Service
  • learned about how to be road aware with Leisure Services
  • enjoyed a "Tour de France" breakfast before school
  • had our bikes checked and serviced by the "Dr Bike" team from the Sustrans charity (an organisation focussed on developing sustainable transport).

Raffle tickets were given out during the week to those children who came to school on either a bike or scooter and our Community Police Officers and Graham and Michael (our two "Dr Bike" volunteers) drew tickets in our celebration assembly.  Winners received prizes ranging from luminous snap bands, badges, bags, bike lights to gift vouchers from Halfords.
