MISSION STATEMENT

All members of staff at St. Elfod Junior School aim to provide the highest standard of education we are able to, so that the pupils can realise their full potential.

We endeavour to promote a healthy and happy environment to facilitate this while at the same time encouraging the pupils to acquire independence of thought, and a sense of responsibility to others.

It goes without saying that all aspects of school life, including training and development, provide equal opportunities irrespective of gender, race or religion.

We can do no better than to quote Dearing:

"Education must nourish the diverse talents of our children.  It must widen their horizons; develop their appetite for learning; enable them to live life to the full.  It must foster intellectual, physical, cultural, moral and spiritual development and help children develop the values that will guide them through difficult decisions they will have, inevitably, to make in adult life."

SCHOOL ORGANISATION.

St. Elfod Junior School is a purpose built L.E.A. Primary School catering for boys and girls between the ages of seven and eleven years.  The school population is approximately 330 pupils.  The  children are taught in single age, mixed ability groups; however, there is an element of 'banding' and teacher specialisation.  The yearly intake is approximately 80 children, coming from the Infant School, Glan Gele, which is on the same campus.  The school also caters for children with special educational needs from the coastal area.

SPECIAL NEEDS SUPPORT WITHIN THE SCHOOL.

The school endeavours to cater for all pupils, some of whom have special needs, which may be of a physical, emotional, social or academic nature.  This could well include learning difficulties but also those who are especially able or gifted.

HOMEWORK.

The school considers homework to be an important part of every pupil's education.  Whatever an individual's ability, homework develops the skills of working independently, as well as extending and reinforcing work done in the classroom.  Through regular completion of homework pupils also learn to manage their own time and to meet deadlines.  It should be remembered that homework is often a continuation of work begun in class and they need to complete this in order to cover all aspects of work in certain subjects.
